Ontario Auto Insurance Reforms

As a result of the Ontario Government’s five year review of Auto Insurance, a number of changes to the Accident Benefits section of the Ontario Auto Insurance policy came into effect on September 1, 2010.

Income Replacement – The standard level of income replacement provided by the policy is $400 per week. 

You have the option of increasing this limit to $600, $800, or $1,000 per week.  Income replacement benefits are based on 70% of your gross weekly income

Caregiver, Housekeeping, and Home Maintenance – The standard Caregiver, Housekeeping and Home Maintenance Expenses benefit is only available for a person who is catastrophically impaired. 

You have the option of purchasing this option to apply for all impairments.

Medical, Rehabilitation, and Attendant Care – The standard benefit provides up to $50,000 for medical and rehabilitation expenses, with a ten year time limit in most cases, and up to $36,000 for attendant care expenses.  If catastrophically impaired, the standard benefit provides up to $1,000,000 for medical and rehabilitation expenses and up to $1,000,000 for attendant care expenses.

You may purchase an option to increase the medical and rehabilitation benefit to $100,000;

You may purchase an optional increase in the attendant care benefit to $72,000;

You may purchase an optional increase in the benefit for medical and rehabilitation expenses to $1,100,000 and attendant care expenses to $1,072,000.

Death and Funeral – The standard level of death benefit paid to a surviving spouse and surviving dependants of a person killed ($25,000 to surviving spouse, $10,000 to surviving dependant) and a funeral expense benefit of $6,000.

You may purchase an option to increase these limits to $50,000 to a surviving spouse and $20,000 to a surviving dependant with a funeral expense benefit of $8,000.

Dependant Care- There is no standard dependant care benefit for persons who are employed and care for dependants. 

You may purchase an optional benefit to receive weekly dependant care expenses of $75 for the first dependant, $25 for each additional dependant, up to $150 per week.

Indexation – You may purchase an optional benefit that will ensure that certain weekly benefit payments and monetary limits will be adjusted on an annual basis to reflect changes in the cost of living.
